Gas safety checks

What is checked when obtaining a gas safety certificate?

Gas safety certificates are essential for all gas appliances in a home. They play an important role in ensuring all occupants’ safety, as well as in helping to protect the environment. A gas safety certificate is also required when renting out your property so that tenants can be sure they will not have any issues with their heating or cooking equipment while they live there.

What is a gas safety certificate?

A gas safety certificate is a document that shows that your gas appliances are safe and working correctly. It’s valid for 12 months, so if you have an old one, it may be time to get a new one.

A gas safety certificate is required by law since April 2014. A qualified person, such as a plumber, who has been trained in gas safety can issue the certificate on behalf of the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem). You can ask any person or business that works with your boiler or cooker to give you one but make sure they are fully qualified before doing so – otherwise, they might not be able to complete all the checks required by Ofgem.
