How to improve your refrigerator’s energy efficiency
Your commercial refrigerator is one of the most important appliances in your business and probably one of the most used. It consumes energy every minute of the day, and it would therefore benefit you and the environment if you made it more energy efficient. Here are a few tips on how you can improve your refrigerator’s energy efficiency.
Upgrade to an energy-efficient model
If your refrigerator is 15 years old or more, you should consider upgrading to an Energy-Star certified model. Although the initial cost for a new unit may be high, you will save more in the long run. Opt for a model with more stars on the energy rating label. The more the stars, the more energy-efficient it is and the less electricity it will consume.
Replace the fridge gasket
A gasket is the rubber seal on the fridge door. Although it is often overlooked, this plastic lining is critical in ensuring that your refrigerator runs efficiently. It forms an airtight seal that prevents warm air from getting into your fridge. Gaskets wear out and lose some of their suction over time, so replace them once you notice the doors aren’t shutting completely.
Place your refrigerator away from heat sources
The physical position of your refrigerator has an impact on how hard it has to work. Ensure that you place it as far as possible from anything that emits high heat levels. Also, ensure that there is at least 5 cm of free space around the sides, top, and back of your unit to help it release heat from the compressor.
Always keep the door closed
It may seem obvious but sometimes we forget that whenever you open your refrigerator, cold air escapes, and warm air gets in, forcing your unit to work harder to get things cool again. Therefore, avoid opening the door too many times and for too long. Signs might jog the memory of employees to be mindful when opening the door.
